The Brazen Belles return to Cotuit Center for the Arts with a new show, “Brazen Belles Burlesque: Hotter than the 4th of July” from Wednesday, July 9, through Saturday, July 12, at 8 PM.
The Brazen Belles are a Cape Cod-based burlesque troupe who perform in the style of old-time vaudeville shows. Flirty, rowdy, sultry, and outrageous, the Belles offer an array of singing, dancing, acting, good humor, sass, and seduction. Their racy costumes—corsets, teddies, and eye-catching lingerie—attract attention, but the women’s chorus line kicks, slapstick antics, physical comedy skits, and sultry dance moves keep the audience laughing and entertained.
The troupe was founded several years ago by Aanjes Hershfield of Woods Hole. Ms. Hershfeld had recently returned from the West Coast. Hoping to bring a bit of California quirkiness with her, she gathered together a group of friends who shared her love of singing, dancing, and having fun, modeling the troupe on burlesque shows popular from the 1860s through the 1940s.
“Burlesque is known for its striptease, but it is much more than that,” Ms. Hershfield said. “It began in rebellion to the strict Victorian era that preceded it and includes political and social satire, such as playing with gender roles.”
For Ms. Hershfield, it is the empowerment of women, not their exploitation, that is at the heart of the Brazen Belles. “The audience response to the show has been great,” she said. “Everyone will enjoy it, but this show is really for women. It is a smart, witty show designed to show off the minds, as well as the figures, of these great women, while communicating the message that all women can be alluring.”
Tickets are $25, $22 for seniors, and $20 for members, and may be purchased by calling 508-428-0669 or visiting artsonthecape.org.
The Cotuit Center for the Arts is located at 4404 Route 28 in Cotuit.
