'The Dish On Fish' Has Goal Of Making Cape Residents Aware Of Fisheries

John Pappalardo believes a strong fishing industry is important to the Cape’s economy and character. A lifelong Chatham resident and commercial fisherman, the CEO of the Cape Cod Commercial Fishermen’s Alliance wants Cape Codders to know about the many day-boat fishermen in all Cape Cod ports who last year brought in some 12 million pounds of seafood, worth $16 million.

He is bringing his message to a dinner at the Pickle Jar Kitchen in Falmouth, where he plans to showcase the local catch at “The Dish on Fish” on Wednesday, September 17, at 6 PM.

A menu of local seafood caught by Cape fishermen, paired with wines, will be prepared by Pickle Jar chef Casey Gallant. Four courses with four wines will feature bluefish, black sea bass, oysters and clams.

Mr. Pappalardo noted that black sea bass is caught locally on rod and reel or in fish pots but usually is shipped out of state. In fact, 95 percent of the catch is shipped to New York and sent to Asia.

Mr. Pappalardo will be at the dinner at the Pickle Jar, as will commercial fisherman Willy Hatch of Machaca Charters of Falmouth.

The fishermen will answer questions and give an overview of the industry. The fishermen’s alliance has these dinners several times a year, with the goal to make Cape Cod residents aware of the commercial fishermen in the area and the work of the CCFA.

Mr. Pappalardo said, “Many residents are aware there is some fishing going on here but don’t have an idea of how many fishermen there are. We decided, ‘Let’s do something to bring together fishermen and Cape residents, and show the challenges and opportunities the industry faces and what the alliance can do.’

“We want to make residents aware of commercial fishermen and the organization that advocates for sustainable fishery.”

Founded in 1991, the fishermen’s alliance has expanded recently, and was highlighted in a recent article in the Los Angeles Times.

The price for the dinner is $75 per person and includes tax and gratuity.
