Braves Best In League At All-Star Break

By midweek [July 23], having won their last three games and seven of their last 10, the Bourne Braves were the best team in the Cape Cod Baseball League with a record of 23-11-1 and 47 points, six points better than their closest West Division rival, the Falmouth Commodores.

The Braves lost second baseman Billy Fleming this week when the West Virginia junior signed a professional contract with the New York Yankees. Fleming reported to the Yankees’ farm team in the Gulf Coast League. Fleming was hitting .357 when he left. Richie Martin Jr. leads the club in hitting at .344 and as of midweek led the league in hits with 44. Joey Strain (Winthrop) is tied for the league lead in saves with six.

Mark Laird (LSU) and Blake Davey (UConn) will start this Sunday in the 52nd annual Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game. Martin, Strain and Travis Bergen (Kennesaw State) will also represent Bourne.

Bourne 12 - Cotuit 4

The Braves knocked out 15 hits on Wednesday, July 23, scoring a dozen times in a 12-4 victory over Cotuit. Bourne scored twice in the bottom of the first, then went up 6-0 in the fourth. The Kettleers scored a run in the top of the sixth, but in the bottom of the frame Bourne added four more as it pulled out to a 12-1 lead. Cotuit scored single runs in the final three innings.

Sam Kmiec (Winthrop) got the start for Bourne, going 5 and two-third innings in earning the win. Trey Wingenter (Auburn) got the start for the Kettleers. He allowed six runs on nine hits over four innings and was tagged with the loss.

Richie Martin Jr. finished the night three for four with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI. Blake Allemand (Texas A&M) and Stephen Wrenn (Georgia) both had three hits. Logan Taylor (Texas A&M) led Cotuit with three hits and a run scored.

Bourne 9 - Falmouth 4

The Braves tied Falmouth 1-1 in the top of the third Tuesday, July 22, at Guv Fuller Field, only to have their hosts take a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame. Falmouth led 4-2 going into the top of the eighth, when Bourne came back with seven runs to put the game away.

Ryan Kellogg (Arizona State) got the start for the Braves and went five innings, allowing two runs on six hits. Brett Morales (Florida) pitched two innings in relief, giving up two more runs and picking up the win. Jacob Sparger (Louisville) and John Gorman (Boston College) finished off the final two frames.

Harrison Bader (Florida) got things going in the eighth with a bases-loaded single into center field that scored two runs. Blake Allemand (Texas A&M) knocked in another and then Jason Delay (Vanderbilt) singled into center field, scoring two more. Richie Martin Jr. then stepped to the plate for the second time in the inning and with runners at first and second tripled for the sixth and seventh runs of the inning.

Bader and Delay each finished the afternoon two for four with two RBI and a run scored.

Bourne 7 - Hyannis 4

The Braves gave up four runs in the top of the third to the visiting Harbor Hawks on Monday, July 21, but bounced back and scored four times in the bottom of the frame. Bourne went on to score a run in each of the next three innings for a 7-4 victory.

Andrew Sopko (Gonzaga) got the start for the Braves and went four innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. Eric Nyquist (Mercer) came in for two innings of relief, holding Hyannis to one hit and picking up the win. Mason Klotz (Southeastern Louisiana) and Dylan Nelson (Radford) split the next two innings and Joey Strain (Winthrop) retired the side in order in the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season.

Trailing 4-0 in the bottom of the third and with runners on first and second, Brett Sullivan (University of the Pacific) tripled to cut the Hyannis lead in half. Billy Fleming (West Virginia) then drove in Sullivan. Fleming later scored on a wild pitch to tie the game.

Sullivan led the Braves at the plate, finishing two for four with three RBIs and a run scored. Richie Martin Jr. (Florida) and Gavin Collins (Mississippi State) each had two hits, as did Sutton Whiting (Louisville), who went two for three with a walk and two runs scored.

Bourne 3 - Wareham 3

Bourne’s Travis Bergen (Kennesaw State) gave up three runs on two hits and two errors in the bottom of the first inning on Saturday, July 19, in a 3-3, 12-inning tie at Spillane Field in Wareham. Only one of the three runs was earned. After that, Bergen settled down and went five more frames, holding the Gatemen scoreless while striking out nine. Lucas Laster (Mississippi State), John Gorman (Boston College) and Jacob Sparger (Louisville) combined to finish the night for the Braves, allowing a combined six hits but no runs.

The Braves made the score 3-1 in the top of the fifth when Zander Wiel (Vanderbilt) hit a home run. Bourne added two more runs in the seventh when Brett Sullivan (University of the Pacific) singled and later scored on a wild pitch and Wiel walked and scored on a passed ball.

The Braves managed just three hits over 12 innings against Wareham pitching.
