Fisherman Statue Unveiling In Buzzards Bay Park

Residents are invited to attend the unveiling of “The Fisherman” statue, a dedication to all who fish the Cape Cod Canal,  in Buzzards Bay Park on Saturday, July 12.

The event begins at 11:30 AM with a buffet lunch catered by Buzzards Bay Catering and Cape Cod Beer. The unveiling of the statue will take place from 1:30 to 2 PM, followed by musical entertainment from the Jimmy Decatur Band until 5 PM.

Ten feet tall from base to top, the statue depicts a fisherman carrying two 40-pound stripers. It was created by Hyannis sculptor David Lewis and bronzed in Arizona. A 1953 photograph of legendary Bourne fisherman Stan Gibbs was the inspiration for the statue's pose.

The text on the statue will read,  “The Fisherman. A tribute to past, present and future striped bass fishermen of the great Cape Cod Canal, inspired by local fishing legend Stan Gibbs.”
