Construction is underway on Route 28A on the new mixed-use complex to be known as Cataumet Gardens. A building permit for the new mixed residential and commercial development was issued on April 25, and construction began shortly after. Developer Warren E. Dalton of North Falmouth announced at the website of his company, Chappy LLC, that Cataumet Gardens is scheduled to be completed sometime next year.
The Bourne Planning Board approved the project back in late November 2012, after it had been under review by the board since August of that year. The complex is being built across Route 28A from The Daily Brew and The Parrot Bar & Grille.
The land the development is being built on had been a portion of the former Cataumet Garden Center, roughly 11 acres that was purchased by the Bourne Conservation Trust in August 2007. Approximately 50,000 square feet, the development includes three buildings with a mix of retail and commercial office space on the ground floor and residential units on the upper floors. A fourth building will be a garage with 45 parking spaces on the first floor and more residential space on the second floor.
The original plan called for 12 one-bedroom apartments but planners downsized it to eight. The board’s approval of the project left open the option for Mr. Dalton to come back once the complex has been constructed and is operating to ask the board to amend the decision to allow the additional four units.
Some board members were also concerned whether there would be sufficient parking, but the conservation trust agreed to sell a bit more land to Mr. Dalton. The board decided that would provide enough parking and access to the complex.
