The household hazardous waste collections are underway for 2014. The first of these collections for the Upper Cape will be Saturday, April 19, from 9 AM to 1 PM, at Sandwich High School, 365 Quaker Meetinghouse Road.
Cleaners, chemicals, gasoline, mercury products, pesticides, yard chemicals, and oil-based paints, polishes and stains will be accepted.
A town-by-town residents’ guide with a household hazardous products checklist is available at www.capecodextension.org.
Latex paint is not hazardous and may be dried out and thrown out.
Local business owners may also dispose of hazardous and toxic materials at this collection for a fee, which will be based on the type of materials to be disposed. Businesses may call Mike Maguire, extension educator on water quality and hazardous materials for the Cape Cod Extension, at 508-375-6699.
Additional collection dates will be June 21 at Falmouth High School, August 16 at Mashpee High School and October 18 at Peebes Elementary School in Bourne.
