On Friday evening, July 18, at 6 o’clock, author Elin Hilderbrand will sign copies of her new novel, “The Matchmaker,” at Eight Cousins Books, as part of the store’s “Toast the Author!” series. Ms. Hilderbrand has lived on Nantucket for 20 years with her husband and three children. “The Matchmaker” is her 13th novel.
The matchmaker is Dabney Kimball Beech, the 48-year-old fifth generation Nantucketer, who has had a lifelong gift for matchmaking (42 couples still together to her credit). But when Dabney discovers she is dying of pancreatic cancer, she sets out to find matches for a few people very close to home: her husband, celebrated economist John Boxmiller Beech; her lover, journalist Clendenin Hughes; and her daughter, Agnes, who is engaged to be married to the wrong man. As time slips away from Dabney, she is determined to find matches for those she loves most—but at what cost to her own relationships? “The Matchmaker” is a heartbreaking story about losing and finding love, even as you’re running out of time.
Ms. Hilderbrand was born and raised in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and is a graduate of Johns Hopkins University and was previously a teaching/writing fellow at the University of Iowa Writers’ Workshop. Her previous novels include “Summerland,” “Beautiful Day,” “Barefoot,” “A Summer Affair,” and “The Blue Bistro,” all of which have been set on and around Nantucket.
Eight Cousins Books is at 189 Main Street in Falmouth.
