Where: Bourne High School | 75 Waterhouse Road | Bourne
On Saturday, June 15, Falmouth’s Turning Pointe Dance Studio will present "Sprites of Spring” at Bourne High Schoolat 2pm and 6pm. The cast consists of 200 students from Falmouth, Sandwich, Bourne, Mashpee, Hyannis, and surrounding towns, and the performance will include several styles of dance including ballet, pointe, contemporary, tap, jazz, and hip hop.
The studio’s Artistic Director, Laura Sciortino, says that “One of the highlights of this year’s show will be an excerpt from The Sleeping Beauty. The tutus were custom-made for this ballet by a professional costume designer in California, and the girls are very excited to wear them." She went on to explain that "the version of the ballet we are doing uses Marius Petipa's original 1890 choreography from the Kirov Ballet. Many studios and companies perform other versions of this ballet with less challenging choreography, but Yves De Bouteiller, who set the piece for us, did not 'water down' the choreography for the students, so the girls have had to work very hard this spring to master it."
Mr. De Bouteiller, who made multiple trips from France to work with the dancers, also choreographed a contemporary piece for the show that was inspired by the poem/lyrics Fujiyama by Louis "Moondog" Harden (1916-1999), an avant garde American composer and poet whose work has been heralded by Philip Glass and others. The handpainted silk kimono costumes that will be worn for this piece were based on the famous Mount Fujipainting South Wind at Clear Dawn by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849). These costumes were also made by the California costume designer Nancy Gallagher of SewBallet.com.
