Monument Beach Polar Bear Plunge
When: Wed Jan 1st
12:00 pm - 12:30 pm
Where: Monument Beach parking lot
Monument Beach Polar Club’s 17th annual New Year’s Day swim. At noon, the chill-defying swimmers will take the icy plunge.
The plunge is a fundraiser for the Bourne Friends Food Pantry. Mr. Dingmann said that last year the club raised $5,300, and typically they raise $4,000 to $6,000 each year. To date, the club has donated a total of $58,100.
“Every penny goes to the food pantry,” he said, adding that the Monument Beach Polar Club is the food pantry’s single largest private contributor. “Thanks to the generosity of those who take part and the pledges they receive to swim,” he said.
Club members ask that prospective swimmers come early, as the swim begins promptly at noon and lasts only as long as the bravest swimmer can stand the chilly water.
Footwear is required and swimmers are invited to wear their craziest outfit or hat. Mr. Dingmann said that is part of the fun of the plunge, the costumes and getups that people show up wearing. There are, in fact, award certificates that are handed out in various categories, such as sexiest swimmer, best looking, oldest and youngest.
The donation to swim is $20 per person. Swimmers get a T-shirt and a Certificate of Bravery.
