Mick Carlon, author of "Travels with Louis," will be at Titcomb's Bookshop for a book talk and signing on Saturday, September 22nd from 4 to 5 PM.
"Travels with Louis” tells the tale of a twelve-year-old boy named Fred who loves reading, baseball, and playing trumpet with his neighbor, Louis Armstrong in Queens, New York. Fred accompanies Louis on adventures to Nashville, where he encounters a Civil Rights lunch counter strike, and then to London and Paris. Characters include Langston Hughes, Dizzy Gillespie, and Duke Ellington. Jazz photographer, Jack Bradley says of the book: "Reading this book is like visiting my friend again. This is the way he was, folks."
Mick Carlon is a 27-year veteran English/journalism teacher at both the high and middle school levels. A life-long jazz fan, he regularly plays jazz in his classroom and has turned hundreds of students into jazz fans. His first children's novel, "Riding on Duke's Train," was published in January of 2012.
