"Willy Wonka" is a stage adaptation of the childhood favorite and classic "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory," Roald Dahl's timeless story of a reclusive candy maker who offers a special prize to the five children who find the five Golden Tickets he has hidden in his chocolate bars.
"Willy Wonka" was one of Ms. Colley's favorite movies as a child. She loves the colorful characters and values the message: that authenticity, honesty, and simplicity win out in the end. The show includes favorite songs from the original movie, including the Oompa-Loompa song, "Pure Imagination," "Candy Man," and "I Want It Now."
Everyone does some dancing, as well.
Ms. Colley has added creative touches and assembled a cast and crew that bring out the charm-and the absurdity-of the show.
Spencer Hallett and Michelle Law have designed many set pieces that will move and change throughout the show as well as exciting special video effects. Bruce Allen is the set builder.
Amy Canadax is the costume designer, responsible for creations such creatures as the tiny nutcrackers to the orange-skinned, green-haired Oompa-Loompas.
The cast of 35 includes many family groupings, husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters. There are five nutcrackers, most of whom are about 5 years old, and 12 Oompa-Loompas, all 11 years old and under.
Charlie Bucket is played by Jake Bova, of Sandwich, who, at 10 years old, already has considerable experience in local theater.
Hannah Carrita will play Veruca Salt; Theresa Willander is Violet Beauregarde; Caleb Seaver is Augusta Gloop, and Aiden Milstead is Mike Teavee.
Willy Wonka is played by Paul Fendler. Many of the cast members have participated in other shows at Cotuit Center for the Arts, and all are enthusiastic about the show.
Ms. Colley, a choreographer and director, has directed several other shows at Cotuit, including "Anything Goes," "Bleacher Bums," and others and has done choreography for many more. She conducts a theater workshop for children three times a year.
