New this year, visitors will have a chance to win a brand new iPad. One complimentary raffle ticket will accompany each paid $5 adult admission, with additional raffle tickets for sale inside. Children, as always, are admitted free of charge. Active duty service men and women, along with their families, are also welcome to visit the mansion at no charge.
Family fun will be in full force on Saturdays and Sundays in the newly created Children's Room on the second floor. Theme-based activities will celebrate Winter Wonderland, Classic Christmas, Holiday Animals, Chanukah, and the Winter Solstice. Stories, music and make-and-take crafts will all be on tap for the family, along with special visits from Santa.
The Story Book Nook will be occupied on December 1 by Lee Drescher and Corinne Possel. On December 8, Amy Sellers, Rosemary Modic and Lauren Banker-Johnson will entertain while Sally Egan and Cleo Zani lead the fun on December 9. And in the "red, white and blue room" right next door, families will have the opportunity to send a note of thanks and holiday cheer to service men and women overseas.
Fridays will feature special adult presentations and holiday-themed demonstrations. Today, florist Anna Holmes presents her favorite in-a-flash decorating ideas and WCAI's Dan Tritle reads from Dylan Thomas' "A Child's Christmas in Wales." Wine and cheese will be served at 5 while Judy Risch plays the piano, and at 6:30, Robert Wyatt will lead the crowd in a sing-along of holiday tunes.
Friday, December 7 features Gail Blakely in the kitchen and Robert Wyatt presenting a brief history of holiday music. Rabbi Elias Lieberman will tell the story of Chanukah. Judy Risch will play piano, followed by Stephanie Miele and Bob Schneider at 5. Once again, Robert Wyatt will wrap things up with his rousing carol sing. Attendance at all presentations is included in the price of admission.
The talent of several local designers will be on display throughout the Hall. Terri Navickas of Brick Kiln Farm and Shelley Baker-Vance of The Salty Mermaid will decorate the outside of Highfield, while Courtney Dunbury of Courtney's Floral Creations, Mary Lavoie of Lawrence Gardens and Anna Holmes from Flowers by Anna have all returned once again to work their magic on the interior rooms. The team from the Floral Department at Roche Bros in Mashpee and Jennifer Chagnon, owner of The Pink Polka Dot, are lending their expertise for the first time. The decorating effort was coordinated by Holidays at Highfield co-chairs Patti Riccardelli and Paula Taylor, both of East Falmouth, with consultation from Sue Hobart.
More musical entertainment throughout the two weekends will be provided by some of the area's most popular musicians including the Falmouth Chamber Players, Stephanie Miele and Bob Schneider, the harp students of Cynthia Gordon O'Neill, Mary Schulkovitz and students, Passacaglia, the Falmouth Academy Cool Jazz Band, Falmouth Fiddlers, the Cape Cod Conservatory Brass Ensemble, Notescape, Norma Perron, the Tuesday Tooters and Tradewinds.
More holiday-related activities will be found at Highfield throughout the month of December. The immensely popular Highfield Hall Holiday Ball on Saturday evening, December 15 from 7 to 11 will sparkle with music from the Marsels and fabulous food from Chef Roland. Tickets to this event of the season are $125 per person and may be purchased on the web or by phone.
Highfield will wrap up the year with its annual holiday concert on Sunday, December 23. Two performances, at 3 and 7 PM, will feature a charming presentation of "A Child's Christmas in Wales" by the Aurea Ensemble. The Ensemble will also perform chamber works of Handel, Vivaldi and Bach. Tickets are $40 for members of Historic Highfield and $45 for non-members. The holiday concert is always a sellout, so early reservations are recommended.
Highfield Hall is an engaging historic property that has been restored and revitalized to serve as a center of cultural and community life in Falmouth. With its unique combination of resources - the mansion, the Highfield estate, and neighboring Beebe Woods - Highfield provides an interactive learning environment for adults, children and families.
