The Barnstable Comedy Club will open its production of "Bedside Manners," a comedy by British writer and actor Derek Benfield, on Thursday, January 10.
The play will run through January 27 with shows on Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 PM and Sundays at 2:30 PM.
Directed by Ann Ring, this British farce begins with Ferris who, after reluctantly agreeing to look after his sister's seedy country inn, becomes entwined in the adulterous affairs of his tenants.
In one room of the inn is Mr. Smith a married man but there with another woman; in another room is another Mr. Smith, also married and also not to his current companion. Hilarity (and confusion) ensues when it seems the woman staying with the first Mr. Smith seems to have a connection to the second Mr. Smith, and the woman staying with the second Mr. Smith has a certain connected to the first Mr. Smith.
Soon, Ferris is engulfed in the drama as he is persuaded by his guests to prevent the inevitable meetings of husbands, wives and lovers.
The late Derek Benfield, a British farce specialist, is known for his quirky English comedies such as "Running Riot" and, as his most recent success, starring in the English TV specials "Hetty Wainthropp Investigates" and "Doctor Who." He has written over thirty plays.
Ann Ring has directed a number of comedies, including last year's "Moon Over Buffalo" at the Barnstable Comedy Club. In written correspondence, she says that she is "more inclined to choose plays that are funny...especially in this "dead of winter" time slot when cabin fever starts to set in." The director has also acted in several comedies around the Cape.
In the cast is Christopher Cooley of Marstons Mills as Ferris, Dan Powers of Hyannis as Roger, Anna Botsford of Centerville as Sally, Bill Ring of Marstons Mills as Geoff, and Angela Courtney-Rossi of Lynn as Helen.
Tickets are $18, $16 for students and seniors, and may be reserved by calling the box office at 508-362-6333 (cash or check only.)
