“It’s a Family Affair,” an exhibition from a Marstons Mills family, will open at Woodruff’s Art Center in Mashpee Commons on January 27 and will run through March 17. A reception will be held Sunday, January 27, from 5 to 7 PM.
It is often said that artistic talents alternate generations. This is not the case for the Ferguson family. Chris O’Dell Ferguson of Marstons Mills and her daughters, Cailyn, 20, and Kelly, 17, are a talented family of artists. The family’s home is a studio shared with their beloved chickens, roosters, cat, parakeet, guinea pig, iguana and, of course, husband and father, Kevin.
Art revolves around life or perhaps life revolves around art, but in any event, art is their way of life, said the family in a written statement.
Growing up in Putnam Valley, New York, Ms. Ferguson was inspired by parents who were always drawing, painting, sculpting and building; her father built her easels, among other things. Her parents relocated to the Shenandoah Valley in Virginia, where Cailyn and Kelly spent many creative summers with their grandparents. Cailyn, a second year art student at Cape Cod Community College, and Kelly, a senior at Barnstable High School, have followed in the family artistic footsteps.
The family draws, paints, sculpts, and makes jewelry, using any and all materials they can get their hands on. Ms. Ferguson’s acrylic paintings are distinctive and impressionistic and, at times, realistic with a hint of mystery. Her three-dimensional works reveal a feeling of freedom; often assembled from recycled household materials, they are serious sculptures yet whimsical conversation pieces.
Cailyn’s style exudes her sense of free spirit and love of nature; her comfort with watercolors shines through. Kelly works with the pastel medium and the human figure is reflected in her illustrative style.
Individually, each of this family’s works stands on its own but collectively there is a synergy between art and family.
Woodruff’s Art Center hours are Monday through Saturday, 9 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday, 11 AM to 5 PM.
