Falmouth Chorale Present Haydn's "The Creation" @ Falmouth Academy
When: Sun Mar 17th
3:00 pm - 6:00 pm
Where: Falmouth Academy | 7 Highfield Drive | Falmouth
Haydn’s great oratorio, “The Creation,” with John Yankee conducting the Falmouth Chorale on the weekend of March 16th and 17th along with guest soloists and orchestra.
Haydn’s oratorio depicts and celebrates the creation of the world as described in the “Book of Genesis” and Milton’s “Paradise Lost.” Haydn composed this oratorio between 1796 and 1798, in the Age of Reason, inspired as many were at that time by scientific discoveries in the astronomy of his day. The composition came at the height of his creative powers after a sojourn in England, where he heard many of Handel’s choral works which were clearly an influence.
The Chorale will perform the translation by Alice Parker and Robert Shaw that unites Haydn‘s vivid musical passages with a clear and expressive English text based on the original language of Milton and the King James bible. Before this new version, a re-translation into English from German was used for many years.
Guest soloists Erin M. Smith, Ray Bauwens and Thomas Jones, will join the performance
