Terry Rioux, a Falmouth resident recently retired after 30 years as Diving Safety Officer at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, will give a talk at the Woods Hole Public Library on Wednesday, April 3, at 7:30 PM about a project that he worked on during the Vietnam War when he was a U.S.Navy diver and marine mammal handler. The mission was named”Project Short Time”; Atlantic bottlenose dolphins were trained by the Navy to counteract the threat of enemy sappers attaching explosives to American vessels in the waters surrounding South Vietnam.   .
A book describing the fascinating history of this military experiment “Defender Dolphins, the Story of Project Short Time” has just been written by U. S .Navy Capt (ret) Harold W. Goforth, Jr., PhD. Terry’s photos are included in the book’s illustrations. As a participant in this project, Terry will give the audience a first-hand narrative of this little-known segment of history.
The event will be held in the lower level meeting room of the Library and is free and open to the public. For more information, call the Library at 508-548-8961 or visit the website at
