The Friends of the Mashpee Public Library grand opening celebration has been canceled due to a persistent odor in the area around the first-floor circulation desk.
Barbara Notarius, president of the nonprofit Friends group, said the decision was made yesterday afternoon to cancel the event, where more than 200 people were expected, because it was unclear whether contractors brought in to diagnose and treat the smell would be able to complete their work by Sunday, when the event was scheduled.
“This could not have come at a worse time, obviously,” Ms. Notarius said.
The event, a major fundraiser for the Friends group, which sponsors materials, programs, and staff at the library, will be rescheduled but likely not until fall, possibly to coincide with Oktoberfest, she said.
“We’ve had this date planned for a year,” she said, explaining that the Friends group would be looking to find a date when the library is available and that would not be in competition with other events.
