One driver will be cited following a two-car accident that temporarily shut down a stretch of Route 151 Friday morning.
A garbage truck and a pickup truck were involved in the accident, which occurred at 8:05 AM. Lieutenant Brian L. Reid of the Falmouth Police Department released further details this morning, stating that the accident occurred when the pickup, driven by 24-year-old Courtney Johnson of Esker Place, East Falmouth, lost control on the slushy road and slid into the oncoming lane of traffic.
Dale Cunningham, 36, of Mashpee, the garbage truck driver, tried to avoid a collision but also lost control. The vehicles made contact and the garbage truck went off the road, hit the soft shoulder, and rolled over while the pickup truck burst into flames.
The pickup truck was fully engulfed in fire by the time police arrived on the scene. The Falmouth Fire Rescue Department arrived to extinguish the fire.
Route 151 near Ashumet Road was closed down and traffic rerouted around the scene. The road was reopened to traffic by 11:30 AM.
Ms. Johnson was pulled from her vehicle by witnesses, and both she and Mr. Cunningham were transported to Falmouth Hospital.
Mr. Cunningham was treated and released, and Ms. Johnson was later taken by Med-Flight helicopter to an undisclosed Boston hospital. Lt. Reid said she is expected to make a full recovery.
Lt. Reid said Ms. Johnson was found at fault in the accident for operating at a speed greater than reasonable for the conditions and will receive a citation.
