In recent years, when the Mackie family home was destroyed by fire, and when Christopher Vangelder was seriously injured in a motorcycle accident, Laura Franks was one of the first to coordinate fundraising and assistance efforts.
Now, the Mashpee community is rallying around Ms. Franks.
Ms. Franks was recently diagnosed with an acute, aggressive form of multiple sclerosis, which has left her debilitated in a month’s time.
To help defray the cost of medical expenses, transportation to and from Boston, and to make her home more accessible and compatible for necessary medical equipment, a fundraising event will be held on Sunday, June 29.
The event will be held from 3 to 7 PM at Soprano’s Ristorante at Deer Crossing in Mashpee.
Christine Mackie, one of the coordinators of the event, said that there will be appetizers, door prizes, raffles, a silent auction, and a 50/50 raffle.
Admission to the event will be $10 at the door.
Ms. Franks and her husband, Todd, who together founded the Mashpee Youth Lacrosse League, have three children: Cole, 16; Emily 13; and Matthew, 12.
“The Franks are doers. I am so happy that the people she has helped before are the people paying it forward. Mashpee is a great community where people step up to help each other in times of need,” Lucy Burton, a friend of the family, said.
In addition to the fundraising event, a fund for the family has been started at Citizens Bank.
Donations can be sent to The Franks Family Fund, c/o Citizens Bank, 39 Nathan Ellis Highway, Mashpee, MA, 02649.
