The Mashpee School Committee and Board of Selectmen will appoint one of four candidates to serve on the school committee by a special meeting at Mashpee Town Hall on Monday, August 4, at 6:30 PM.
The new member will fill the vacancy left by Phyllis A. Sprout until the May 2015 town election.
Ms. Sprout, who served on the committee for two years, resigned last month after an incident involving her and a Quashnet School student that led to a police investigation.
The four candidates for the position are Mashpee residents Jean K. Bowden, Mohamad A. Fahd, Geoffrey Gorman, and current finance committee member George C. Schmidt III.
Each candidate will be given an opportunity to speak at the meeting, following which board of selectmen chairman Wayne E. Taylor and school committee chairman Scott P. McGee will ask them questions on behalf of their committees. The meeting will culminate in a vote by all members involved.
Once the appointment is made, Mr. McGee said, the new member will need to be sworn in by the town clerk as soon as possible, since the next school committee meeting will be only two days later, on August 6.
