Barbara L. Jonic

Barbara Louise Jonic of Sandwich died of natural causes on May 5. She was 66.
Ms. Jonic, a nurse practitioner and longtime manager of The Boston Globe health department, retired from the Globe in 2004.
A native of Glen Rock, New Jersey, she was the second of five children born to Catherine M. and George A. Jonic. At the time of her death she was 23 days shy of her 67th birthday.
She was a 1969 graduate of Duquesne University School of Nursing. Upon graduation she was hired by Massachusetts General Hospital. In 1982 she was retained by The Boston Globe to work in its health department. A short time later she earned her nurse practitioner certificate at Harvard University and was later promoted to lead the Globe’s health department.
After retirement, she worked on a temporary basis as a hospice nurse.
She enjoyed cooking and music, including Willie Nelson, The Beatles and ballads of Ireland.
She leaves her siblings, George Jonic Jr. and his wife, Carol, of Venice, Florida, Robert Jonic of Portland, Maine, Christine Jonic of Los Angeles and Florence Jonic of Attleboro; three nephews; one niece; and extended family.
Visiting hours will be Tuesday, May 13, from 4 to 7 PM in the Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich.
A Mass of Christian burial will be Wednesday, May 14, at 11 AM in Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, Sandwich.
Burial will follow in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Sandwich.
