Duane E. Hayes, 79, of Sagamore Beach died July 8.
Mr. Hayes was the husband of Hetty (Luider) Hayes for 56 years.
He was born and raised in Corunna, Michigan, the son of the late Kenneth and Elinor (Berry) Hayes. He graduated from Corunna High School in 1952.
Mr. Hayes served in the US Army, and then pursued a career in education. He obtained his master’s degree from Central Michigan University and taught for 36 years in the Oscoda Public School District.
In 2001, he moved to Sagamore Beach, where he enjoyed riding his bike, cross-country skiing, cooking, and reading. He also sang in a church choir for many years.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Hayes leaves his daughter, Tammy Elsenheimer and her husband, Tim Elsenheimer, of Lagrange, Maine; his son, Troy Hayes and his wife, Elaine Hayes, of Nashua, New Hampshire; two brothers, Dale Hayes and his wife, Bonnie Hayes, of Saginaw, Michigan and Dan Hayes of Owosso, Michigan; and three sisters, Darlene Ustynek and her husband, Frank Ustynek, of Owosso, Michigan, Diane Johnson and her husband, Keith Johnson, of Corunna, Michigan, and Mary Henry and her husband, Ed Henry, of Oakley, Michigan. He also leaves five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, July 26, at 11 AM in the First Church of Christ, 136 Main Street, Sandwich.
