Eleanore C. Kirtley, 82, of East Falmouth died at her home on April 27 after a brief illness.
She was the life partner of Dr. Peter J. Hamre and widow of Rollin A. Kirtley Jr., who died in 1993.
Ms. Kirtley was born in Coaldale, Pennsylvania, to Anna and Frank Rehatchek.
She moved to Florida, where she met Mr. Kirtley. From 1952 to 1960 she lived on Nantucket, where she worked at the Cottage Hospital and was among those who attended to the casualties when the Andrea Doria collided with another ocean liner and eventually sank in 1956.
Ms. Kirtley moved to Falmouth in 1960 and in 1963 bought a home on Siders Pond Road. The house had one of the first in-ground swimming pools in Falmouth.
She worked as a licensed practical nurse in Falmouth for more than 20 years, aiding many of the town’s older citizens.
From 1993 to 2011 she wintered in St. Thomas with Dr. Hamre.
She contributed more than 15 years to the International Rolex Regatta committee.
Together with Dr. Hamre she traveled the world extensively, including a memorable trip aboard the Queen Elizabeth II.
She enjoyed cooking, including tomato pie, Czechoslovakian pickles and split pea soup, and entertaining.
Ms. Kirtley was a parishioner of St. Anthony’s Church in East Falmouth.
She leaves a daughter, Carole Ann Kirtley of East Falmouth; her sons, Bruce Kirtley of Galveston, Texas, and Richard Kirtley of East Falmouth and Humble, Texas; her granddaughter, Kristin McCray Howard of Savannah, Georgia; and her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Karli Howard of Delray Beach, Florida.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 5, from 4 to 6 PM at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, 475 Main Street, Falmouth.
