James Harold Andersen of Pittsfield, who leaves family in Falmouth, died at home on May 2. He was 65.
Born in Westfield, he was the son of Harold and Catherine Crean Andersen.
He was a 1966 graduate of Pittsfield High School and received his bachelor of science degree in 1972 from the University of Bridgeport in Connecticut. In 1976 he earned a master’s in education from Westfield State University.
An educator for more than 40 years, he taught reading, English and history at Pittsfield High School, South Junior High in Herberg, the Adult Learning Center in Pittsfield, Berkshire Community College, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts and Springfield Technical Community College.
He was an adviser for the classes of 1983, 1986, 1992 and 1997 at Pittsfield High School, and tutored aspiring college applicants.
Mr. Andersen enjoyed playing, coaching and watching sports, especially hockey and tennis, and was a coach at all levels, from youth to college. He was also a hockey referee and longtime member of the Berkshire chapter of the National Ice Hockey Officials Association. The highlight of his coaching career was winning the 1990 Pittsfield High School state hockey championship.
He was an avid reader and a percussionist, playing in marching bands, summer concerts and musical productions for Pittsfield High School. He also enjoyed spending time at Berkshire
County’s summer cultural venues, especially Tanglewood, and vacationing in new places.
Mr. Andersen leaves his wife of 39 years, Patricia Andersen; a son, Sean Andersen, and his wife, Sara Andersen, of Avon, Connecticut; a daughter, Kerry Cusick, and her husband, Steve Cusick, of Littleton; his grandchildren, Lily and Sam Andersen of Avon, Connecticut, and Owen and Dillon Cusick of Littleton; his siblings, Kathleen Arth of Falmouth; Neil Andersen of Falmouth, Ellen Erhard of Marstons Mills and Edward Andersen of Falmouth; seven nieces and seven nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, David Andersen, and his nephew, Ryan Andersen.
Calling hours will be held on Tuesday, May 6, from 4 to 7 PM at the Dery Funeral Home, 54 Bradford Street, Pittsfield.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 7, at 9:15 AM from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 o’clock at St. Joseph Church, 414 North Street, Pittsfield, and burial in St. Joseph Cemetery.
