Joseph F. Cassidy Sr., 92, of Sandwich died at home on April 15 after a brief illness.
He was married for 55 years to Gertrude (Murtha) Cassidy, who died in 2000.
Mr. Cassidy, the son of Michael F. and Sarah (Brennan) Cassidy, was born and raised in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He attended local schools and was a 1939 graduate of St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket.
A US Navy veteran of World War II, he served aboard the USS Panamint, an amphibious force command ship stationed in the Pacific Theater during the invasion of Okinawa.
He was a general manager for Saylesville Warehouse in Cumberland, Rhode Island, for 25 years. Prior to that he worked for the Draper Corporation of Pawtucket, Standard Transportation of Pawtucket and the Outlet Company of Coventry, Rhode Island.
Mr. Cassidy, who also had lived in Rehoboth and Harwichport, was a licensed real estate broker when he died.
He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus, Delaney Council #57 Delaney-St. Teresa in Pawtucket; a member of American Legion Post 188 in Sandwich and member of the VFW in Chatham.
Mr. Cassidy served on the zoning board of review in Pawtucket from 1952 to 1963. He was an active member of the Friends of Senior Citizens in Sandwich and past president of the Sandwich Senior Citizens Club.
He founded the Cape Cod Old Timers Softball League in 1987.
Mr. Cassidy leaves his five children, Michael D. Cassidy and his wife, Jane-Ellen Cassidy, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, Joseph F. Cassidy Jr. and his wife, Claire Cassidy, of Germantown, Maryland, Maureen Outlaw and her husband, Reginald Outlaw, also of Pawtucket, Joni Packhem of Newport, Rhode Island, and Diane Dorval, also of Pawtucket; six grandchildren, Katherine Cassidy, Joseph F. Cassidy III, Sean Cassidy, Shannon Donnelly, Patrick Cassidy and Brian Williamson; seven great-grandchildren; and his longtime companion, Judith Grasso of Sandwich.
In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by his brother, George T. Cassidy.
Calling hours will be in Corpus Christi Church, 324 Quaker Meetinghouse Road, East Sandwich, on Tuesday, April 22, from 4 to 8 PM.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 23, at 11 AM in Corpus Christi Church.
Burial will be private.
