Viola M. (Morris) Holtzclaw, 97, of Mashpee died at Falmouth Hospital on June 23.
She was predeceased by her husband, Ernest Holtzclaw.
Born in Chelsea, Ms. Holtzclaw was the daughter of James and Viola Morris.
She worked for the Department of Veteran Affairs for 28 years.
In 1975, Ms. Holtzclaw retired to Cape Cod. She volunteered and received her certificate to be a nurse’s aide in Boston City Hospital. She continued her career as a nurse’s aide until ill health took over.
She was a member of the Mashpee Lions Club and the Mashpee Garden Club. She also was president of the Godmothers of Cape Cod for 18 years.
Ms. Holtzclaw raised money for many charities, including the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
She leaves her son, William Lewis Jr. of Mashpee; her granddaughter, India Loren Simpson of Chicago, Illinois; three great-grandchildren, Taylor Raye Simpson, Robert Alexander Simpson, and Christian Hunter Simpson, all of Chicago; and many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Ms. Holtzclaw was predeceased by her sister, Annie J. Kersey; and her first husband, William S. Lewis Sr.
Services will be private.
