Twenty years ago, having resolved to stay here, we finally bought a house in Falmouth. If someone had said to me at that time that the Lawrence School would get rid of its librarian, I probably wouldn’t have believed them.
Now a gesture has been made, signifying that our intellectual tradition no longer deserves to be honored, that our children no longer need direct contact with their literature, nor guidance through it—that for the junior high school of a town as wealthy as Falmouth, from now on, Google and Amazon will do.
