Sandwich Finance Committee Chairman Resigns

As the May 5 Annual Town Meeting draws near, changes are afoot on the finance committee, the primary advisor to the meeting’s voters.

Committee chairman Paul J. Sylvia, who was appointed to the committee in 2009, resigned in a letter dated April 2 to the town clerk, Taylor D. White.

“I have enjoyed serving the town on various committees over the past 12 years, but need to focus my time and attention elsewhere,” Mr. Sylvia wrote.

Mr. Sylvia’s letter was dated the day after the committee’s April 1 meeting, when members voted to recommend the proposed town operating budget for the coming fiscal year.

The committee also voted to recommend most of the Town Meeting warrant. The committee did leave out Article 12, which covered a potential new valuation agreement with NRG Energy concerning the Canal Electric power plant, given that the agreement still was under negotiation.

This past Tuesday, with the agreement completed, the committee voted to recommend Article 12.

Following the resignation of Mr. Sylvia, the committee elected vice chairman Ellen R. Yaffe to the chairman’s seat, and member Thomas R. Hickey to the vice chairman’s seat.

Ms. Yaffe and Mr. Hickey will serve in those roles until the committee’s first meeting of the fiscal year, when a full committee will decide who to name chairman and vice chairman for the coming year.

In another development, member Anne B. Dessertine, who has been serving a one-year unexpired term, will not be seeking reappointment.

Town moderator Garry Blank, who appoints the members of the committee, said he will decide before the end of the fiscal year in June who to name to the committee.
