The Bourne High School boys’ track and field team sent six athletes to the Massachusetts State Track Coaches Association Decathlon South. The event was held at Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro on Monday and Tuesday, June 9 and 10.
The first of the five events held on Monday was the 100 meter dash. Scott Vannett led the Canalmen, posting a time of 12.46 seconds for 42nd place. Merrick Rubinstein (12.90) ran 47th, Richard Finnegan (12.64) was 54th, Owen May (13.53) took 60th, Xavier Cruz (13.73) was 61st and Ian Morgan (14.42) finished 62nd.
In the 400 meter it was Vannett leading the Canalmen with a 19th place finish in a time of 56.13. Finnegan (58.89) was 43rd, Rubinstein (60.63) took 54th, May (61.87) took 57th, Cruz (62.67) ran 58th and Morgan (65.31) finished 61st.
In the day’s third event it was Vannett once again leading the Canalmen, as he cleared 5-1 in the high jump for 24th place. Cruz cleared 4-11 to finish 34th, Finnegan and Rubinstein tied (4-9.75) for 37th. Morgan (4-4) took 58th and May cleared 4-2 to finish 60th.
Vannett took 50th overall in the long jump at 16-4. Rubinstein (16-1.75) was 52nd, Finnegan (16-1.5) took 53rd, Cruz (14-10.5) was 59th, May (14-1.25) was 60th and Morgan (11-8.5) finished 61st.
Morgan led the way for Bourne in the shot put to wrap up the first day’s events with a toss of 28-11 for 41st place. Vannett (25-5) was 55th, Finnegan (24-5.5) took 58th, May (23-2) was 59th, Rubinstein (22-1.25) was 60th and Cruz (20-4) finished 62nd.
On Tuesday Vannett led the Canalmen with a time of 19.2 seconds in the 110 high hurdles, taking 30th place. Rubinstein (20.34) was 52nd, Finnegan (20.70) took 55th, Cruz (22.15) was 58th, May (23.19) was 59th and Morgan (25.0) finished 60th.
Vannett posted the best finish of the event for the Canalmen in the 1500 meter taking second place in a time of 4:42.6. Cruz (5:01.2) ran 12th, Rubinstein (5:04.06) was 16th, Finnegan (5:15.56) ran 28th, May (5:18.45) was 31st and Morgan (5:24.56) finished 38th.
In the discus it was Morgan leading the way with a throw of 81-3 for 28th place. Vannett (77-1) was 34th, Rubinstein (57-8) took 55th, Finnegan (48-11) was 58th, May had a throw of 48 feet for 59th place and Cruz (47-6) finished 60th.
Vannett led the Canalmen in the javelin with a throw of 100-8 for 34th place. Finnegan (90-10.5) was 43rd, Rubinstein (86-7) took 45th, Morgan 58-10) was 57th, May (58-0) was 58th and Cruz (57-8) finished 60th.
In the final event of the second day Vannett took 26th in the triple jump at 36-11.5. Rubinstein (36-4) was 31st, Finnegan (33-9) was 48th, Cruz (32-3) took 55th and May (28-6) finished 59th.
Vannett led Bourne with 4,310 points, Rubinstein had 3,575, Finnegan finished with 3,432 points, May had 2,844, Cruz had 2,515 and Morgan had 2,269 points.
