The Bourne girls’ tennis team turned the South Sectional Match upside down for the Carver Crusaders. The 13th-seeded Lady Canalmen (10-9) shocked fourth-seeded Carver (13-4) by knocking the Crusaders out of the MIAA Division 3 South Sectionals on Thursday, May 29, by a score of 3-2.
Bourne advances to the quarterfinal round on Tuesday, when they travel to Norwell to face the fifth-seeded Clippers (14-4) at 3:30 PM.
“We played with a lot of heart,” coach Andrew Arki said. “We had to come back to win in all of our matches, it was definitely dramatic.”
Sarah Buck lost her first set at second singles in a close 5-7 contest, but she charged back, winning the next two sets 6-4 and 6-3 in what turned out to be the deciding match.
Abby Pomeroy fell 4-6 in her first set at third singles, but rallied and came back to win the next two sets, 6-4 and 6-3. Allene Gallerani and Nora Center lost their opening set at second doubles 3-6, but fought back to win the second and third sets 6-1 and 6-3.
“They were fantastic,” the coach said. “They really turned it on.”
The Crusaders claimed wins at first singles, with Bourne’s Bri Girouard losing 1-6, 3-6 and at first doubles with the BHS duo of Molina Oung and Gabby Siroonian going three sets in a 6-3, 3-6, 2-6 loss.
