University of Louisville track and field’s Sam Bombaugh broke the school record for the hammer throw on Saturday, April 19, at the UK Relays in Lexington, Kentucky, in the UL men’s team’s final regular-season meet before the conference championships.
The Falmouth native broke the 20-year-old record last year, in March, at the Vanderbilt Black and Gold Invite on a toss of 62.94 meters (206 feet, 6 inches). He surpassed that mark on his fourth attempt, setting a new record of 62.96m (206 feet, 7 inches), on a throw that ranks atop the AAC and in the top 20 in the region.
Through three meets in the outdoor season, the senior has totaled two runner-up finishes and one-third place showing.
Bombaugh and Louisville compete at the AAC Outdoor Championships in Tampa, Florida, May 2 through 4 at the USF Track and Field Stadium. He won the Big East Conference hammer throw title last year.
