Botelho completed the course in 46 minutes, 48.6 seconds.

For years it seemed like Ray Botelho might never win his hometown race. Now, he’s won it twice.

Botelho, a professional triathlete who focuses on the long Iron Man courses, prevailed at the Falmouth Sprint Triathlon on Saturday morning, July 12, by running one of the best times that the course has seen in years.

Botelho bettered his previous winning time by nearly three full minutes as he completed the Surf Drive-based course with a time of 46 minutes, 48.6 seconds. He prevailed over second-place runner, Justin Torrellas of Harwich, by close to three minutes. Torrellas was second overall with a time of 49:47.3.

The professional Iron Man competitor, who finished ninth last year in Louisville’s big race, got off to a strong start and never looked back. His time of 5:13 for the one-third of a mile swim portion was the quickest of the day, nine seconds faster than the second-best time, which was swum by Mark Desautelle of Darien, Connecticut. Desautelle completed that section in 5:24. Katie McCully of Eastham was the fastest woman out of the water, and third fastest person. She got to the beach in 5:30. She went on to finish third in the women’s open division.

Botelho won the race based on not only his speed on the course, but also off of it. His transitions were lightning quick. The first transition, to the bike, was finished by Botelho in just 45.5 seconds, which was three seconds faster than the second fastest, which was completed by Falmouth’s Beth Giuffrida (48.3 seconds). He also had the 10th fastest second transition time, getting from the bike to the road race in 43.7 seconds.

After dominating the water, Botelho followed with an equally excellent showing on the bike. He needed just 21 minutes and 14 seconds to get through the 9.4-mile section of the course. Those two fantastic portions of the race allowed him to cruise through the 5K run. Running 6:09 mile splits, he ran through that part of the event in 19:04, bringing him to the Surf Drive Beach finish line in a fast 46:58.6. It was easily the fastest time recorded in the event since Without Limits Productions took over the race four years ago.

Third place was taken by David Melly of Newton. He finished in 50:20.5. In fourth was Allen Horton of Hudson, in 50:33.1.

Falmouth’s Eric Wheeler placed fifth overall. He qualified to compete with the elite athletes for the first time, based on his performance at the Beach to Battleship Iron Man race in North Carolina last fall. The physical therapist, who works at Mashpee’s Cape Cod Rehab, showed that he belonged up front with a time of 50:36.5, easily a PR for the race.

“It was a huge confidence boost for me. I didn’t want to be the guy in the elite wave that didn’t belong there,” he said.

Wheeler finished the swim in 6:27 and then got out on the bike, where he finished with a fast time of 22:10, second only to Botelho in that part of the event. He traded places back and forth out on the run with Horton before being overtaken late. “I knew I was doing well out on the bike because no one was passing me,” he said.

Claire Twark of Boston was the women’s winner of the Sprint Triathlon. She came out of a later heat to finish with a time of 52:37.3, which was 22nd overall. She had the second fastest swim time of the women, finishing that portion in 6:38. Her bike time was 31:17, which was the fastest in her division, and her time of 20:23 on the run topped the women’s field.

Donna Kay-Ness of Somers, Connecticut, was second in 53:30.8. McCully was third. Tracy Birmingham of Falmouth took fourth in the women’s division with a time of 56:20.2. The 42-year-old was out of the water in 6:06, second among the women, had the fastest bike time, of 26:59, and ran the road race in 21:08, which was best in her division.
