Bourne Braves Notes - July 4, 2014

Fourth of July Parade

Players, coaches, Interns, bat boys, staff and members of the Bourne Braves Board of Directors will march in the Eighth Annual Bourne Fourth of July Parade in Buzzards Bay. The parade begins at 10 AM. The Braves host Wareham that night with the first pitch slated for 6 PM at Doran Park. There will be a special pre-game ceremony honoring veterans and active duty service men and women.

Last week the Bourne Braves released outfielder Ben Johnson (Texas), infielder Ryan Howard (Missouri) and right handed pitcher Cameron Sorgie (Albany). The team activated left handed pitcher Josh Rogers (Louisville).

Red Shirt Friday

For the fifth season, this summer the Cape Cod Baseball League will hold Red Shirt Friday games. The home team will wear red shirts in support of our troops. The CCBL has teamed up with the Red Sox Foundation and the Massachusetts General Hospital Home Base Program to help Iraq and Afghanistan veterans and military families heal from the invisible wounds of war.

As the month of June ends, Mark Laird (LSU) leads the Braves at the plate with an average of .340. Richie Martin Jr. (Florida) and Logan Ratledge (NC State) are also hitting above the .300 mark as Martin entered last Tuesday’s off day at .317 and Ratledge at .308.

Over the past week Blake Allemand (Texas A&M) has swung the hottest bat for the Braves, as he led the team with a .375 average.

Andrew Sopko (Gonzaga) and Ryan Kellogg (Arizona State) have each made three starts in the month of June and both have two wins. They have each worked 15 innings with Sopko posting an ERA of 2.40, with Kellogg coming in at 4.20. Sopko leads the team in strikeouts with 19 and has surrendered just one extra base hit.
