The Bourne Braves will send five players to Red Wilson Field in South Yarmouth Saturday for the Cape Cod Baseball League All-Star Game. Bourne right-handed pitcher Jared Long (Ohio State) will get the start for the West, with Braves’ teammate Max Pentecost (Kennesaw State) starting behind the plate. Tim Caputo (Rhode Island) and Clinton Freeman (East Tennessee) are also on the roster, with left-hander Ryan Kellogg (Arizona State) in the bullpen. Last year’s all-star game at Whitehouse Field in Harwich ended in a 1-1 tie.
Pentecost enters the all-star break leading the league at the plate. Going into last night’s action he was hitting .386, while Long leads the lead in ERA at 0.32 and with five wins.
The Braves remain in fourth place in the West with a record of 16-16-1, three games behind the league leaders. Cotuit and Hyannis are tied at the top with 39 points each. Bourne has won six of their last 10 games. Entering last night’s game at Orleans, 11 regular season games remain on the summer schedule.
The Cape League playoffs are slated to begin August 6 with the top four teams in each division taking part.
Orleans 5 - Bourne 4
The Firebirds scored five times in the first five innings Wednesday night before Hawtin Buchanan (Mississippi) and Will Cox (Mississippi State) combined in the final four frames to shut them down. Jaron Long got the start for the Braves surrendering two runs in two innings. Josh Laxer (Mississippi) pitched the next three innings allowing three more runs. Cotuit 8 - Bourne 5
A Tim Caputo two-RBI double wasn’t enough in the bottom of the eighth Monday as the Braves fell short of Cotuit 8-5. The Braves held a 2-0 lead after three innings, but a four-run fourth by the Kettleers, highlighted by a three-run home run off the bat of Rhett Wiseman (Vanderbilt) left Bourne playing catch-up.
Kyle Kubat (Nebraska) got the start for Bourne, going five and two-thirds innings, allowing five runs on eight hits, while striking out three. Jacob Lindgren (Mississippi State) and Will Cox (Mississippi State) saw action in relief, but could not hold back the Kettleers.
The Braves were first on the scoreboard when Mark Laird (LSU) singled to score Bobby Boyd (West Virginia). They added a second run in the third when Clinton Freeman doubled and scored on a triple by Pat Kelly (Nebraska). It was Freeman’s seventh double of the season.
Caputo finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBI and a run scored. Boyd was 2-for-4 with two walks and a run scored.
Bourne 4 - Harwich 3
Austin Gomber (Florida Atlantic) allowed two runs on five hits Sunday night as he led the Braves to a 4-3 victory over the Mariners at Whitehouse Field. Mike Costello (Radford) allowed a run in two innings of relief. Justin McCalvin (Kennesaw State) shut the mariners down in the eighth and Trace Dempsey (Ohio State) earned his fourth save of the summer in the ninth.
Bourne tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the fourth when Max Pentecost (Kennesaw State) singled, stole second, advanced to third on an error and then scored on a double by Matt Gonzalez (Georgia Tech). The Braves added another two runs in the fifth on hits by Bobby Boyd and Clinton Freeman (East Tennessee) that scored Boyd and Eric Fisher (Arkansas).
The Mariners cut the lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the frame, but Bourne bounced back to take a 4-2 lead in the seventh on a double by Freeman that scored Boyd.
