Bourne Braves Sitting Atop Western Division

The Bourne Braves (10-4) have won seven of their last 10 games and are in first place in the Cape Cod Baseball League Western Division, one game ahead of the Hyannis Harbor Hawks.

Mark Laird (LSU) leads the team with a .368 average. Over the last seven days he has hit at a .444 clip. Reliever John Gorman (Boston College) leads the club in ERA at 0.00 over 7-1/3 innings. Gorman is also the saves leader with four. Ryan Kellogg (Arizona State) leads the starting rotation with two wins and an ERA of 0.75.

Chatham 13 - Bourne 3

The Chatham Anglers got to the Braves pitching staff for 20 hits on Wednesday, June 25, as they stopped a five-game Bourne win streak, topping the Braves 13-3.

Eric Nyquist (Mercer) got the start for Bourne and went two innings, allowing four runs on six hits. Brett Morales came in for 2-2/3 innings of relief, giving up nine runs on nine hits. Only two of the Chatham runs charged to Morales were earned. Two other Bourne pitchers saw action and combined to surrender five runs.

Each team scored in the first inning. Mark Laird (LSU) doubled, scoring Richie Martin (Florida) for Bourne. The Braves scored single runs in the seventh and ninth.

Laird had a big night at the plate for the Braves, going four for four with a walk and two RBI. Harrison Bader (Florida) was two for four.


Bourne 5 - Orleans 2

Ryan Kellogg (Arizona State) got the start and picked up the win on Tuesday, June 24, in a 5-2 victory at Eldredge Park in Orleans. Kellogg went six innings, allowing no runs on six hits while striking out four.

The Braves got things going in the top of the second inning when Gavin Collins (Mississippi State) scored on a base hit by Blake Allemand (Texas A&M). Brian Serven (Arizona State) then hit a two-run home run for a quick 3-0 Bourne lead. Richie Martin Jr. (Florida) scored in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly by Billy Fleming (West Virginia). The Braves added a fifth run in the fifth when Martin doubled, scoring Stephen Wrenn (Georgia).

The Firebirds added runs in the eighth and ninth innings.

Allemand finished the night two for three with a walk, a run scored and an RBI. Collins was two for four with a run scored.

Bourne 3 - Yarmouth-Dennis 1

The Braves took both ends of a doubleheader on Sunday, June 33, over the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox by identical 3-1 scores. Dylan Nelson (Radford) got the start for the Braves in the nightcap, going five innings, allowing one run on three hits. Nelson surrendered two of the three Y-D hits and its lone run in the first inning before settling down and striking out three over the next four frames. Jacob Sparger (Louisville) pitched a scoreless sixth for Bourne, turning the ball over to John Gorman (Boston College) for the seventh-inning save.

The Braves sent eight men to the plate in the bottom of the fifth, scoring all three of their runs on five hits. The big hit came with two outs when Blake Davey (Connecticut) singled into left field, scoring Martin and Laird.

Davey finished the day one for three with two RBI. Martin was two for three with a run scored.

Bourne 3 - Yarmouth-Dennis 1

In Sunday’s opener Andrew Sopko (Gonzaga) got the start and went four innings, allowing one run on six hits while striking out seven. Joey Strain (Winthrop) pitched the ninth, picking up his third save.

Bourne scored in the bottom of the second inning when Davey walked and later scored on a double by Harrison Bader (Florida). The Red Sox tied the score in the top of the third, but the Braves put up two in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-1 lead.

With one out in the bottom of the third and runners on first and second, Collins singled, scoring Laird. Fleming scored the second Bourne run of the inning on a fielder’s choice.

Bourne knocked out nine hits, with Laird, Fleming, Davey and Bader each finishing with two hits.

Bourne 4 - Harwich 2

Sam Kimiec (Winthrop) scattered four hits and allowed two runs over six innings as he picked up the win in a 4-2 victory for the Braves over the visiting Mariners on Saturday, June 21. Kimiec struck out six and walked just one.

The Mariners had three of their hits and scored both of their runs in the top of the first inning, before Kimiec settled down and shut them out over the next five. Brett Morales (Florida) came in for two innings of hitless relief and Gorman pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning to earn the save.

The Braves scored a run in the second when Davey hit a ground rule double, went to third on a ground out and scored on a fielder’s choice. the Braves tied the game in the fifth when Martin scored on a Collins sacrifice fly.

Bourne took the lead in the sixth when Brett Sullivan (University of the Pacific) scored on a base hit by Martin. Bourne added an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Braves hammered out 13 hits, led by Martin, who finished the night three for five.

Bourne 2 - Harwich 1

On Friday, June 20, the Braves edged Harwich 2-1. Travis Bergen (Kennesaw State) got the win, allowing one run on six hits over five innings of work. Thomas Hatch (Oklahoma State) pitched two scoreless innings in relief, with Strain pitching the final two frames to pick up the save.

Martin led Bourne at the plate, finishing two for three with a run scored.
