Jimmy Herget (South Florida) got the Bourne Braves’ summer started on the right foot Wednesday night, June 11, as he allowed just two runs, on six hits, over six innings of work in leading Bourne to a 4-2 victory over the visiting Wareham Gatemen. Herget struck out five and walked one.
After two solid innings of relief from Dylan Nelson (Radford) in which he held Wareham to one hit, Joey Strain (Winthrop) closed out the ninth, picking up the save.
The Gatemen scored first pushing two runs across in the top of the third. The Braves answered in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Bourne sent eight men to the plate in the fourth, pounding out four hits.
Right fielder Harrison Bader (Florida) led off the inning with a single and later came around to score. Second baseman Chesny Young (Mercer) also singled and score, as did first baseman Blake Davey (Connecticut). Davey scored on a single into right field by centerfielder Stephen Wrenn (Georgia).
Bourne added an insurance run in the sixth when Davey led off the frame with a triple and scored on a base hit by left fielder Logan Ratledge (NC State).
Andrew Zapata (Connecticut) took the loss for the Gateman. Wareham pitching surrendered 10 hits, with Wrenn and Ratledge each going 2-for-3 and Davey finishing 2-for-4.
