GENE M. MARCHAND/ENTERPRISE - BHS Field Hockey Emily Cheney

Sophomore Annie Cheney broke the ice and senior Emily Cheney nailed down the win Monday as the Lady Canalmen field hockey team (2-3, 1-3 SCC) sent Sturgis East home with a 4-0 loss.

Annie Cheney scored eight minutes into the opening half assisted by her sister Emily. The senior captain then scored next two goals. Emily Cheney’s goals were assisted by Gabie Siroonian.

BHS notched a fourth goal before the half on an unassisted effort from Morgan Callahan.

“Bella Powers played strong at mid, which is a new position for her,” coach Chris Mason said. “Audrey Kelleher and Bry Bjelf played strong defensively moving that ball outside the 25 yard line. We are extremely young this year with six freshman starters.”

After a scoreless first half on Friday, Emily Cheney drove home her own rebound 15 minutes into the second, scoring what turned out to be the winning goal as the Lady Canalmen posted a 1-0 victory over Wareham.

Any comeback by the Vikings was spoiled by solid play in goal by freshman Jenna Sundquist, who finished the day with nine saves.
