The Bourne 12-year-old all-star team won the District 8 championship last week and is moving on to play in the state tournament this weekend.
In the opening game Bourne defeated South Plymouth by a score of 5-2. They jumped on South Plymouth early, scoring a run in the first inning and then exploding for four more runs in the third. The inning started with a home run blast by Lou Gordon, followed by an onslaught of hits by Jacob Fader, Andrew Williams, James Cahoon and Kyle Casano. Pitchers Devan Harrison and Sam Johnston kept the Plymouth team in check.
The Bourne all stars then defeated last year’s champs, North Plymouth, by a score of 3-2 to move into the district championship round. In the North Plymouth game, the Bourne bats came alive in the first inning with solo home runs by Lou Gordon and Jacob Fader. Gordon went 2-for-2 at the plate and pitched three scoreless innings to earn the win.
After dropping one game to South Plymouth, the Bourne team was in a must win situation. They responded with a thrilling 2-1 extra innings victory over South Plymouth to capture the District 8 championship. In the championship game, Devan Harrison pitched six strong innings. Sam Johnston relieved Harrison in the seventh and pitched two no-hit scoreless innings in relief for the win. The entire team contributed for this win.
The pitchers were aided by stellar defense. Outfielders Jacob Fader, Spencer Rose and Jack Widdison were able to track down the fly balls that were hit their way, while second baseman Aidan Hatton set the tone early by robbing South Plymouth of a line drive in the first inning. The Bourne bats struck in the first inning with a double by Andrew Williams followed by an RBI single by Lou Gordon. The game was tied until the 8th when James Cahoon ripped a bases-loaded single for the go-ahead run. Devan Harrison finished off the game with three consecutive plays at shortstop to capture the District 8 championship title.
Bourne plays for the state tournament title in Raynham with their first game scheduled for Saturday at 6:30 PM.
