Falmouth resident Hannah Ghelfi has an aggressive schedule of junior golf events that she will be playing in, with tee times set up across the United States. She added one more biggie to her slate on Monday, June 23.
Ghelfi, 16, earned a spot in the USGA girls’ junior championship, which will be held in Flagstaff, Arizona, July 21 to 25.
It took a superb back nine by Ghelfi to grab one of the four spots in the Junior Girls Championships as she placed in a tie for second place at Nashawtuc Country Club in Concord.
The course played long that day, at 6,100 yards, but the former Falmouth High star, who now attends Lawrence Academy, made a charge on the back nine to earn her spot.
After the first nine, Ghelfi found herself on the outside looking in, in 13th place overall. She fired an even-par 35 on the back nine, capping it off with a clutch birdie on the 18th hole that got her a spot, and prevented her from having to go to a playoff to determine the final automatic berth. Good friend, and former FHS boys’ standout, Andrew Kelly, served as her caddy for the event and will be going on with her to Arizona.
She had qualified for that tournament by winning a playoff in a qualifying tournament. She shot 79 at Rehoboth Country Club and survived the extra holes to get through.
Ghelfi will play in the American Junior Golf Association’s Ravenwood Junior Championship starting on Monday in Victor, New York. She then will participate in the New England Junior PGA Championship in Marlboro, July 7 and 8.
The next week she will be at the Callaway World Junior tournament in San Diego. That is followed by the USGA Junior Girls Championship in Arizona.
She has several other big tournaments slated throughout the rest of the summer as well.
