Coach Brian Schacter said that his Mashpee High School softball team certainly didn’t earn any style points on Monday against Sturgis West, but the Lady Falcons were able to navigate their way past the Navigators. Mashpee overcame some sloppy defense, on a day that seemed more appropriate for hockey than softball, and defeated visiting Sturgis by a 9-5 score.
After allowing two unearned runs in the top of the second, Mashpee came back to tie the score with two of their own in the bottom of the inning. Teach Childs started the surge with walk, and then with one down Kelly Kalagher earned a free pass as well. Amanda McEnroe later delivered a two-out two-run single to knot things up.
Mashpee went ahead in the fourth, scoring three to take a 5-2 advantage. Holly Stanley got things going when she reached on a West miscue and later scored on an RBI double by Raegan Silvia. McEnroe then followed with her second run-producing hit of the day. After a walk to Caleigh Coughlan, the hot-hitting Mackenzie Madden, who leads the team with a .577 batting average, smoked a single to up the lead to three.
In the fifth, McEnroe walked with the bases loaded to push in the sixth run. Stanley, who reached on an error, then scored on a wild pitch to make it 7-2.
Sturgis got two more unearned runs against Coughlan in the sixth to chip away at the lead, but MHS answered with two of their own in the bottom of the frame. Coughlan started things with a double and then scored on an RBI single by Madden. Taylor Chicoine then hit a two-bagger to make it 9-4.
By stringing together a double and a single in the seventh, Sturgis accounted for their fifth and final run. Coughlan senior scattered nine hits, walked six, struck out a dozen and gave up two earned runs. Coughlan’s ERA for the season sits at a tiny 1.25.
