Canalmen Go Cold In Third Quarter

The Canalmen (2-4) went cold in the third quarter allowing Greater New Bedford Voke Tech to out-score them by a 15-3 margin. Trailing by 22 points entering the final quarter, the Canalmen were unable to catch the Bears allowing the visitors a 51-36 victory. Bourne opened with aggressive play by John Page who stole the ball and took it to the hoop for two points. Page later hit one from the line and put a rebound back for two more to give BHS a 4-3 lead.

The Bears matched Bourne’s speed and quickness. John Kilfoil came off the bench before the end of the opening quarter and hit a couple from the line and drove to the net for a couple more.

GNBVT began to edge away in the second quarter, but Erik Smith kept the scoring close. A three-pointer at the buzzer gave the Bears a 30-20 advantage at halftime. For the first 4:44 of the third quarter the Bears held the Canalmen scoreless. With their last points of the second quarter coming with 2:39 to play, that made Bourne’s scoreless spell 7:23. Tim Savage ended the dry spell hitting one-for-two from the line. Page came away with a steal that he took the length of the court with 1:34 left in the quarter and put up for two points. By the end of the third quarter, GNBVT held a 45-23 advantage. Savage played aggressively in the final quarter, taking a steal the length of the court for a lay up. Just over a minute later he went in for two more points on a fast break drawing a foul, which he made for a three-point play.

Smith drove to the hoop for a couple and Joe Johnson made a nice lay up as BHS continued to fight down the stretch. Drew Girouard hit a jumper in the final minute for the Canalmen.

Page and Savage each finished with six points for Bourne. Cody Sloniecki had seven rebounds. Bourne went 6-for-11 from the free throw line and 0-for-10 from beyond the arc. Jordan Burris led the Bears with 23 points.
