Luke McCombs put the Blue Knights on the scoreboard Wednesday night with a goal in the opening period in what turned into a Sandwich 4-0 victory over previously undefeated Falmouth (8-1-2).

“It was a big win,” Coach Jordan Mohre said. “Maybe it will lead us to focus more. Getting that first goal was huge for us.”

McCombs’ shot from the point was assisted by Joe Robertson and Tim O’Brien.

Sandwich pulled ahead 2-0 when C.J. Dolan struck in the second stanza on a power play out of a scramble to Falmouth goalie Brandon Moore’s right. O’Brien and Jim Fluke picked up the assists.

However, as Coach Mohre pointed out, to be two goals ahead of Falmouth just 3:20 into the second period often isn’t enough. And while the Clippers were without some personnel, they still attacked the Sandwich net forcing goalie Pat Farrington to make 31 saves over the course of the night.

“Pat made some big saves,” Mohre noted. “I thought we did a good job protecting the front of the net and limiting their shots to the outside. Pat did a great job controlling the rebounds.”

The Knights started to sense the victory with 7:15 remaining in the third period when Steve Lessard skated in hard from the right side and drilled a shot past Moore’s outstretched leg.

“Lessard’s goal was pivotal,” Coach Mohre pointed out. “Falmouth is Falmouth, and we knew they’d come at us hard in the third period and they did, but to get that third goal was really a backbreaker.”

Sandwich held their three-goal lead for just about 20 seconds before Tom Colombo took a pass from Dolan and beat Moore again to give SHS a 4-0 lead.

“We go back to work (tomorrow),” the coach added. “Hopefully we’ll carry some of this momentum into that game.”

Sandwich (3-7, 3-4 ACL) hosts Marshfield tomorrow at Gallo Ice Arena at 8 PM.
