The keepers at both ends of the field were tested early Tuesday night. Falmouth’s Greer Gilbert went after Sandwich (2-3) keeper Erin Hurley in the opening minutes with Hurley making the save. Minutes later Sandwich fired a shot at Falmouth (1-3) netminder Abby Gove which was stopped. Both goalies played very well but after 90 minutes, it was Sandwich coming away with a 2-1 victory.
Falmouth won the time of possession battle, controlled the ball, and kept the action in the Sandwich end for most of the first half. But in the 25th minute, Kelsey Medeiros slipped down the left side and around the Falmouth defender, putting a shot on goal that soared over the head of Gove and inside the far post for a 1-0 Sandwich lead.
Three minutes later Gilbert was in on Hurley with another shot that the Sandwich keeper stopped. In the 30th minute Gilbert converted a cross from the right corner into the box, beating Hurley and making it a 1-1 match.
Ashley Solari forced Gove to make an outstretched save in the Falmouth net with a hard shot to the keeper’s right. In the 32nd minute Molly Copeland nearly gave Falmouth the lead, but her shot slipped wide of the post.
Sandwich took a 2-1 lead in the 35th minute on a hard shot by Lia Wilcox from about 20 yards out that flew over Gove’s head. Falmouth pressed for the final 10 minutes of the first half but the defense held firm, giving Sandwich a 2-1 lead at the half.
In the 50th minute Hurley made a leaping save in net for Sandwich. Julie Duffany tested the Sandwich keeper again from 18 yards in front, forcing another save. On the heels of the Duffany shot, Gilbert took the ball up the middle and let loose with a hard shot. Again, Hurley blocked the Falmouth bid.
In the 68th minute Medeiros had the best chance of the second half for Sandwich, drilling a shot that Gove stopped. Gilbert had a breakaway up the left side in the 79th minute but was tangled up by the defense before she could get her shot off.
For Hurley, not the regular keeper for Sandwich, it was her first Cape Cod Women’s Soccer League victory. She finished the night with eight saves. Gove blocked three shots in goal for Falmouth.
