Lightning and rain put a damper on the afternoon as Sandwich American Legion Post 188 (6-4) dropped an 8-4 decision to Bridgewater Post 203 on Sunday.
Bobby Bray got the start for Post 188, but after the second inning the rains came and sent the teams into the dugout. The 40-minute delay didn’t seem to sit well with the Post 188 pitcher, as when the game resumed in the third he had to be replaced due to an injury. Tom Cunning took over on the hill and went three frames before turning the ball over to Kyle Garvey, who got the first out of the sixth. MacGregor Nickerson came on to finish off the top of the sixth.
Mike Pratt knocked in a run for Post 188 in the bottom of the first and Sandwich held onto the lead until the sixth, when Bridgewater exploded for seven runs. Kyle Kasprzyk made it a 2-0 game in favor of Post 188 with an RBI in the fourth.
Bridgewater scored a run in the top of the fifth, before their big inning in the sixth.
Post 188 collected two more runs in the top of the seventh on RBI hits by Garvey and Pratt. Sandwich knocked out six hits, with Kasprzyk going 2-for-3 with a single and a double.
Five runs in the fifth inning put Post 188 over the top Saturday as they claimed a 7-3 victory over visiting Duxbury Post 223 at Fenton Field at Sandwich High School.
Kasprzyk got the start for Post 188 and gave up two runs on three hits in the top of the first. The big Falmouth right-hander settled down after the opening frame and gave visiting Duxbury fits for the next six innings as he went the distance for the win. Kasprzyk scattered five hits in his seven-inning performance, only one for extra bases, without allowing a walk. Only two of the three Duxbury runs were earned.
Duxbury opened the game with back-to-back singles, with one runner scoring on a passed ball and the other on an RBI single. Kasprzyk faced four batters in the second and retired the side in order in the third, fourth, fifth and seventh.
Duxbury scored their third run of the afternoon in the sixth with a lead-off double and an RBI single.
Post 188 got one of the runs back in the third when Jonah Olsen was hit by a pitch, stole second, went to third on a ground out by Mike Janerico and then scored on an infield single by Bray.
Trailing 2-1, Sandwich opened it up in the fifth beginning with a leadoff single into center field by Garvey. Janerico and Bray also singled, followed by Wyatt Hamilton with a base hit into right field scoring Garvey. With two outs and the bases loaded, Jason Hendy stepped into the batter’s box and tripled to center field scoring all three base runners giving Post 188 a 5-2 lead. Hendy then scored on a wild pitch to give Sandwich a 6-2 lead after five.
After Duxbury made it 6-3 in the top of the sixth, Post 188 added another run in the bottom of the frame when Bray singled, stole second, went to third on a base hit by Hamilton and then scored on a baulk.
Post 188 defeated Middleboro Post 64 on Friday by a score of 6-3. Sandwich sent three pitchers to the hill with Garvey getting the start and going four innings before turning it over to Nickerson, who held Middleboro back long enough for Bray to come in and pick up the save. Only one of the three runs allowed by Garvey were earned. He scattered six hits in picking up the win.
Post 188 scored a run in the first and pushed another across in the second. In the third they added three and tacked on one more in the top of the fourth for a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth Middleboro came back with three runs.
In addition to picking up the save, Bray had three hits and two RBI. Olsen and Mike Pratt each had two hits.
Post 188 returns home Saturday when they will host Wareham Post 220 at 2 PM.
