Maurer Plumbing returned to the top of the heap in the Falmouth Adult Hockey League on Thursday night with a victory over the defending champs, Cool It! Heating and Air Conditioning, at the brand-new Falmouth Ice Arena. Maurer got two goals from both Kyle Phelan and Danny Leary as they built an early lead and never looked back. Goaltender Phil Walker did a great job of keeping the veteran Cool It! squad off the board early as he pitched a shutout for more than half of the game which allowed his team to build a comfortable lead on the other end of the ice.
Maurer popped in a pair of first-period goals and built the lead up to four by late in the second period. Cool It! showed the heart that has made them a perennial favorite in the league as they rallied back from 5-1 down to within a goal, at 5-4, with 7:17 left in the game, but Maurer held on from there.
Colin Downey’s second goal of the game, which was set up by a pretty drop pass by Andrew Kelly, made it 5-4. Maurer answered back four minutes later, though, giving themselves some much-needed breathing room when Justin Desharnais popped in a feed from Kyle Kruse to make it 6-4 with just 3:19 left in the title game.
With things getting desperate, Cool It! pulled the keeper for an extra attacker, but it backfired. Leary filled the net with 10.1 seconds remaining to wrap up the championship for Maurer.
The victory marked the third time that Maurer has reigned supreme in the FAHL. Maurer built the lead with two goals in the first period and three more in the second against a pair of second-period goals by Cool It!. Phelan scored a pair of goals in the game’s opening moments, just 43 seconds apart, to put Maurer up, 2-0. The first one came on a scramble in front of the net that saw him poke the puck past John Hallinan. Then, with 14:42 to play in the opening frame, Phelan made a nifty move in front and beat the goalie through the five-hole. Leary and Mark Macallister assisted on that one.
In the third, Maurer made it 3-0 on a goal by Kruse. Desharnais and Connor McCarthy set that one up with 13:15 left in the period. Downey ended Walker’s shutout hopes with a goal with 10:51 to go in the period, but then Maurer struck back with two more to lead by four. Less than a minute after Downey struck, Macallister made it 4-1 and then Leary got his first of the night with 2:11 left in the second. Chris Harlow scored for Cool It! inside the last minute of the period to make it 5-2 heading to the final period.
