Open up those lockers, brush off the cobwebs and let’s get the ball rolling. The start of the 2012 fall sports season is right around the corner and come Monday morning, every one of the Barnstable High teams will be in action preparing for their particular season opener.

The Red Raider football team got its customary jump on the new season with tryouts that began on Wednesday.

The Red Raiders have a scrimmage with Marshfield set for Saturday, September 1, with all eyes on the season opener, which will take place on Friday, September 7, in Fall River against host Durfee.

The other seven Red Raider squads begin their preseason preparations on Monday and they won’t have to wait all that long before the new season gets underway.

The BHS boys’ golf, boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer and field hockey teams all get their seasons in gear on Tuesday, September 4, and both the boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams take to the trails for the first time the following day.

The last Red Raider team to begin the 2012 season is the girls’ volleyball team as the defending, two-time state champs have to wait until Monday, September 10, for its first regular-season contest.

All four of the September 4 contests will be at home with the boys’ golf team hosting Bridgewater-Raynham and the field hockey, boys’ soccer and girls’ soccer teams welcoming their counterparts from Sandwich to the BHS fields.

The cross-country teams open their season the following day with the boys traveling to take on the New Bedford Whalers while the girls’ team will be hosting the NB girls at Hathaway’s Pond.

The girls volleyball team, which will host its annual Play Day at the BHS gym and field house on Saturday, September 1, will take on longtime archrival Falmouth when the Red Raiders begin the defense of the 2011 Division 1 state title.
