Red Raiders Run Past Whalers In Boys’ Cross-Country Season Opener

The Barnstable High boys’ cross-country team took a giant step in the right direction, opening the 2012 dual meet season by outrunning host New Bedford 22-35 in the Whaling City last week.
With the team’s co-captains leading the way, the Red Raiders finished four of the first five runners to wrap up the non-league victory over the Whalers.
Running on the 3.1-mile course at Brooklawn Park, the Red Raiders were led by a trio of co-captains with Paul Capparella setting the pace with his second-place finish in a time of 17:59.
Following their fellow captain home were Tom Cunningham, who claimed third place with his time of 18:35, and John Andres, who placed fourth with his time of 19:02.
Alex Napolitan all but wrapped up the dual-meet “W” with his fifth-place finish in a time of 19:11 and then it was Beau Gagnon who did wrap up the scoring for the Red Raiders when he took eighth place with a time of 19:22.
The Red Raiders also got strong efforts from Nathan Ryan (10th place, 20:07), Casey Connor (11th place, 20:11), Jack Harrington (14th place, 20:53), Hayden St. James (15th place, 21:06), Tim DeCosta (16th place, 21:07), Austin Drouin (17th place, 21:21), Tom Sances (18th place, 21:49), Dan Loiselle (23rd place, 22:54), Robert Welsh (24th place, 23:02), Denver Bergamin (26th place, 23:59), Cameron Faszewski (27th place, 24:20), Parker Baird (29th place, 25:03), Matt Higgins (30th place, 25:04), Will Agnew (32nd place, 27:34), Chris Forance (35th place, 31:00) and Eddie Spalt (36th place, 31:11) in the season-opening victory.
Weekend On The Vineyard
The Red Raiders stayed busy over the weekend by taking part in the Martha’s Vineyard Invitational Cross-Country Meet on Saturday.
Capparella again paced the BHS effort, taking 20th place with a time of 18:08 with Andres following his teammates across the finish line, claiming 37th place with a time of 19:02.
Also competing in the varsity race for the Red Raiders were Gagnon (42nd place, 21:23), Napolitan (51st place, 19:55), Ryan (58th place, 20:22), Casey (60th place, 20:24) and Cunningham (62nd place, 20:34).
The Red Raiders were also well represented in the junior varsity race with Luke Vicente setting the pace as he took eighth place with a time of 19:37.
Also competing in the JV race for the Red Raiders were Harrington (30th place, 20:49), Austin Drouin (36th place, 21:03), Tom Sances (47th place, 21:38), Tim DeCosta (67th place, 22:29), Daniel Loiselle (74th place, 20:08), Cameron Faszewski (84th place, 23:48), Matt Higgins (95th place, 25:56), Denver Bergamin (100th place, 26:27), Eddie Spalt (109th place, 30:15) and Will Agnew (112th place, 31:13).
