The battle for victory bounced back and forth, from end to end of the field, but in the end it was the 15-2 Sandwich Lady Knights coming away with a 1-0 victory.
Visiting Barnstable (3-5-8) played an aggressive game, challenging the Lady Knights, but the defense was too much for the Red Raiders who were unable to muster a single shot on net.
Nicole Martin went after Barnstable goalie Christine Cocozza two minutes into the game with a hard shot from the right side. Sandwich managed four shots on goal in the first 30 minutes, but Cocozza kicked them all aside.
Midway through the game, Erin Gendreau drilled a hard shot at the Red Raider net that the BHS goalie knocked aside with her pad. A minute later Meagan Eccleston fired another shot at Cocozza from the right side which the goalie kicked away.
The Lady Knights opened the second half with a nice pass from Eccleston to Caitlin Cooney that slipped just out of Cooney’s reach at the far side of the net. SHS broke the scoreless tie 8:32 into the half when Gendreau let fly with a hard shot that Eccleston deflected high. The ball slammed off the underside of the top crossbar and hit the ground just inside the net before spinning out to give SHS a 1-0 lead.
With five minutes to play, Eccleston, Martin and Mallory Whelan put together a nice three-pass play and nearly made it a two-goal game. In the final minutes Martin fought tenaciously in front of the net for another Lady Knight goal but Cocozza blocked her attempts.
Sandwich finished with eight shots on goal and 11 corners. Barnstable had no corner shot chances.
The Lady Knights took a 3-0 halftime lead Monday on the way to an 8-1 victory over Plymouth South. Maggie Layo ended the opening half with a goal and then opened the second with another. Sam Anderson then put the game out of reach, scoring the next three goals for SHS.
Martin, Eccleston and Gendreau also had goals for the Lady Knights.
Sandwich wraps up the regular season today, in a game to promote breast cancer awareness, when they host Marshfield at 3:30 PM. A win will lock up the Atlantic Coast League championship for the Lady Knights. The seedings and brackets for the MIAA South Sectionals will be announced on Monday.
