Coming off a win in the championship round of the holiday Kostas Tournament, the Blue Knights (4-2) returned to Gallo Ice Arena Sunday to face Middleborough, dealing the Sachems a 4-1 defeat.
Maverick Hauck got things going for Sandwich with 8:42 into the first period off a perfect pass from left to right by Alex Cabana. Just seconds later at 8:51 Drew Buckland delivered a hard blow from the slot that Middleborough goalie Jeremiah Sylvia never saw.
After killing two penalties early in the second period, the Knights got it going again with Hauck hitting the back of the net for his second, when Dan O’Brien slid him the puck on a breakaway up the middle and Hauck punched it past Sylvia.
Sandwich had a power play opportunity late in the second, but mustered just a single shot on goal.
Cabana made it 4-0 in the third when he collected the rebound of a Hauck shot and skated behind the net tucking the puck inside the right post with 11:11 to play. Middleborough got on the scoreboard two minutes later with a power play goal.
Ryan Oldfield picked up the win in net for the Knights making nine saves. Sandwich outshot the Sachems 25-10.
The Blue Knights defeated Boston Latin 3-1 on Saturday to win the large school championship at the Kostas Tournament in Orleans.
Trailing by a goal in the opening period, O’Brien evened things up with assists from Buckland and Jon Cassista. After a scoreless second period Cassista registered the game winner with 4:20 left in the third assisted by Connor O’Leary. Hauck then added an empty net goal in the final seconds to seal the win.
