The Canalmen (5-6-1, 3-1-1 SCC) returned to the win column Monday afternoon with a 4-1 South Coast Conference win over Dighton-Rehoboth (8-2, 3-2 SCC).

“The first and second periods were the first two complete periods we’ve played this season,” Coach Tom Welch said. “We’re continuing to improve and when we play as a team we play well.”

The Falcons jumped off to an aggressive start in which they held the puck in the Bourne end early in the period, but the BHS defense stepped up and denied D-R any chance of a solid shot. Austin Braley got things going for the Canalmen 8:17 into the first period when he came around the D-R net stickside on goalie Jake Roy and backhanded the puck into the net. At the 10:50-mark Jimmy Commesso put Bourne on top by two when he took a pass from Braley and tucked the puck inside the post and glove of Roy.

Bourne was making the best of every trip down the ice in the opening period. With just 27 second left to play in the opener Chad Marsh put the Canalmen up 3-0 with a blast off a pass from Commesso from the right side that slipped past Roy stick side.

Braley added to the lead in the opening minute of the second stanza with a goal assisted by Commesso and Marsh. Commesso came as close to scoring again for BHS with 2:49 left in the period just missing a loose puck in a scramble in front of the D-R net.

The Falcons spoiled the shutout for Bourne goalie Mike Wiggin in the final period when they scored in the opening minute.

Bourne outshot the Falcons 34-19.

“Mike (Wiggin) continues to improve in goal as he gains confidence,” Coach Welch said. “He is approaching 100 percent after an earlier injury. We look to him to be our anchor down the stretch.”

The Canalmen hammered away at the Greater New Bedford Voc Tech net Saturday night, but Bears goalie Ben Jenkins stopped 31 of the 34 Bourne shots as BHS settled for a 3-3 tie.

The Bears opened the scoring midway through the first period, but enjoyed their lead for just over a minute as Tommy Davis took a pass from fellow defenseman Jacob Davis and beat Jenkins. The Canalmen then took the lead with 3:17 left in the opening period on a goal by Devin Britto assisted by Ed Lavelle.

GNBVT came back with a goal in the middle period to tie the game. Jimmy Commesso put the Canalmen back on top 4:37 into the third with the help of Austin Braley, but the Bears came back about a minute later to once again tie the game.

Mike Wiggin was between the pipes for BHS stopping 13 shots.
